“Our functions were such a success, highly appreciated by our guests, and you have a big contribution in it. It was the first wedding in our family and it wouldn’t have been such a huge HIT without your help and advice. YOU are already IN for my wedding.”, wrote Dubai based Amreen Khan on Wedding Planner Rimjhim Bhagchandani’s website just after her brother’s wedding which was managed by Rimjhim. And around a year later when it was time for Amreen’s wedding, Rimjhim was obviously her Wedding Planner.

Amreen and Faisal’s wedding celebrations commenced on 12th May with the Mehendi at Holiday Inn, Dubai. Since it was a ladies only evening, they let their hair down and danced the night away. Dubai-based singer Shobana did a fantastic job with keeping the ladies engrossed in an innovative round of games- identifying dialogues from popular TV soaps, and then a medley of popular Bollywood songs.  For the décor, amber pin spots and votive candles illuminated the tables and the florals. Oversized urns filled with roses flanked the Mehendi gazebo with strings of marigold tied to gold kaliras, complimenting the gazebo with Indian colors and tradition.

‘Happily ever after starts here…’ was the entrance signage at the next event, the Nikaah (Wedding) that took place at the Safinah ballroom in Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The foyer was illuminated with hundreds of twinkling white candles placed around a huge floral centerpiece. The ballroom was bathed in a pink hue, with clusters of paper flowers and towering flower vases serving as the backdrop. Lounges were accentuated with shimmering pink cushions. Glowing candle lights on the tables and a customized monogram gobo light floating across the room completed the look. Amreen looked radiant in a traditional lehenga, and accessorized her ensemble with stunning diamond and precious gemstones jewelry. Faisal looked equally regal in a designer sherwani.

The Valima (Wedding) was a family affair and the finale event which took place at The Crowne Plaza, Dubai. Tables were swathed in silver and white, featuring snowy and blush florals that spilled out of ornate birdcages. A backdrop filled with candles and blush hydrangeas gave the evening a touch of simple and classic elegance.  Personalized touches were integrated into the wedding  reception, where guests were asked to put their thumbprint on a wedding tree. Later, the colorful tree filled with leaf-looking thumbprints was framed and gifted to the couple. A sentimental video montage concluded the perfect night with an expression of affection and style.

AMREEN & FAISAL WEDDING- PART 1 (MEHNDI)

Amreen and Faisal’s wedding kicked off on 12th of May with the first event-  Mehendi  at Holiday Inn Dubai.

It was a purely ladies evening and men were strictly not allowed. Of course that did not stop Amreen’s slightly older brother (who by the way dotes on Amreen like a father more than a brother) to have a quick peep once in a while to check if his sister was fine. The ladies just let their hair down and danced the night away. Entertainment brings an event to life and the atmosphere created by music is an integral part of the celebration which Dubai based singer Shobana effortlessly handled. She kept the ladies totally engrossed in innovative rounds of games from quizzing them about their sister in laws and mother in laws to identifying Ram Kapoor’s dialogue from popular TV soap Bade Ache Lagte Hai  and Yash from Punar Vivaah followed by medley of popular Bollywood songs. It was fun too watch how Television soaps have actually become a part of our daily life and how all the ladies were totally up to date with the latest happenings on the small screen.

The bride walked in with her family, looking breathtaking in a stunning coral and antique gold Anarkali, a vision of pure simple elegance.

Amber pin spots and votive candles illuminated the tables and florals. The tissue table overlays with delicate gold khadi work completed the look. Oversized urns filled with roses flanked the Mehendi gazebo with strings of marigold tied to gold kaliras, complimenting the gazebo with Indian color and tradition.

The highlight of the Wedding evening (Mehndi) was a special song dedicated by Amreen for her mother (it was Mothers day) It was an emotional moment of pure happiness for them.

The best part of it all is that a lavish wedding do is virtually immune to economic cycles, Bhagchandani believes.

Dubai: Why would anyone want to step out of the arc lights that come with being a celebrity events planner? Let’s just look at two of the perks that come with being one — a chance to micro-manage high-profile events and constant and personal interactions with celebrities.

But Rimjhim Bhagchandani preferred to walk away from it all. “When I started, we lived in simpler times,” she said. “At that stage, live shows in Dubai were truly appreciated [and] the number of artists, sponsors, venues and media avenues were limited.

“Today, Bollywood-related shows far exceed the popularity of classical music events. Also, while the fees for artists have shot up, sponsorship fees have not increased proportionately. Recovering the investment on a live show has thus become more challenging.”

It is an existentialist crisis that stalks many an entrepreneur. Once a business reaches a certain scale and finds it difficult to make the next transition, declining returns could then set in and even turn out to be fatal to the business’s longer-term prospects.

The solution, as far as Bhagchandani was concerned, was to tune into a new career trajectory — that of being a wedding planner. She disagrees —politely — with the suggestion that switching business profiles must have been difficult.

Organised flow

“Personally I don’t see working with weddings to be a transition since the same principle of creating unique events applies strongly,” said Bhagchandani, who holds the working title of director at Rimjhim Events. “Today’s weddings involve bringing together a broad range of ideas that require the assistance of a wedding planner to maintain an organised flow of events.

“The market for wedding planners here is very encouraging [and] the rate card depends on the scope of work provided by the client.”

Bhagchandani certainly has struck a chord there. Weddings are getting more complex and planning them requires as many management skills as a business school can teach you and then some they don’t. The role of wedding planners too has received a high gloss with both Hollywood and Bollywood churning out movies based on that theme.

In a case of life imitating art, planning glitzy weddings are packing in the kind of budgets that a small-scale movie producer would be proud of. “We handled engagements of Dh4 million to Dh6 million plus where we have hosted a minimum of 400 guests.

“Clients don’t mind spending money as long as they feel the expenses are justified. No one wants to compromise on a once in a lifetime wedding.

“For every event — depending on the destination and the client’s requirement — we bring together a specialised team. It’s extremely important to keep up to date with the latest innovations in the industry and I make it a point for us to attend workshops and seminars.

“It is not about the number of people on a payroll, but bringing together talented team members who share a vision.”

Apart from the local market, Rimjhim Events — which charges $20,000 on average to manage a destination wedding — is extending its reach into India and the Far East.

The best part of it all is that a lavish wedding do is virtually immune to economic cycles. “The way I see it, the market for destination weddings is growing every year,” said Bhagchandani.

“I don’t believe that the global slowdown has significantly impacted the industry. Budgets do vary from client to client, but seldom do they vary based on where we are in the economic cycle.

“But we have to work harder to create value in the minds of the clients during recessionary periods.”

Moreover, there is no such thing as an off-season. “Weddings happen throughout the year and across all our destinations. Rimjhim is a wedding planner who does weddings all accross the globe.  I do not recall ever having an off-peak season.”
